Close to 1,000 BILLIONS photos a year. A pretty cool yet frightening number!

In a recent presentation by Yahoo!, it was claimed that as many as 880,000,000,000 photos will be taken in 2014 if we continue on the current trend. This happens at a distance of 185 year from the first candid photograph showing a living person: Boulevard du Temple by Daguerre.

The photography starts officially on 7 January 1839 when Louis Daguerre, at a meeting of the French Academy of Science, announced the invention and described it in general terms. On 19 August 1839, the French Government presented the invention as a gift from France "free to the world" and released a complete set of instructions. Daguerre and the son of his partner Nicéphore Niépce received in exchange lifetime pensions. It has recently been discovered that Daguerre may have misled Niépce's son about the value of the invention in order to better claim any profits from it individually. In 1829, Daguerre partnered with Nicéphore Niépce, an inventor who had produced the world's first heliograph in 1822 and the first permanent camera photograph four years later. Niépce died suddenly in 1833, but Daguerre continued experimenting, and evolved the process which would subsequently be known as the Daguerreotype. (Source Wikipedia)

It is worth mentioning that, previous to address the French Academy, Daguerre strived to interest private investors, but all his efforts proved fruitless. 185 years later, within the same time frame of 10 minutes that Daguerre needed to get the exposure of the first candid photograph in the world, more than 2.5 milions photos are uploaded on Facebook only.
